Welcome to English Language Arts 12! This course is designed to develop the essential reading, writing, speaking, listening and critical thinking skills that will allow you to grow and develop your academic skills for future success!
Course Overview:
The General Curriculum Outcomes (GCOs) are the foundation for all English Language Arts courses. They identify what students are expected to know and be able to do upon completion of study in English language arts. Although the outcomes are organized under the headings Speaking and Listening (S&L), Reading and Viewing (R&V), and Writing and Representing (W&R), it is important to understand that all these language processes are connected and can be developed most effectively when linked together. These are some of the outcomes you will be expected to meet:

Reading and Viewing 45%
- Show an ability to read and analyze (in terms of structure and meaning) literature from different genres and time periods
- Reflect on how meaning is created and developed using the different elements in literature
- Show how the different elements work together to create central themes
- This section will include a novel study as well as reflection and analysis of literature
- Develop an awareness of the writing process and an ability to use the traits of good writing to develop as a writer
- Develop and be able to use grammar appropriate to purpose
- Produce functional documents appropriate to audience and purpose
- Write a persuasive essay
- Design a presentation using research questions and strategies
- Develop an understanding of what respectful, active listening looks and feels like
- Develop and organize communication skills that apply to speaking in different situations
- Develop the ability to listen and respond to the concerns of others
- Practice conventions of English grammar making appropriate language choices in writing and speaking
- Evaluating the effectiveness of your own speaking and listening as well those of others
- This will be done informally and formally through class discussions, group work and presentations.
To access the English 12 course you will need to log into your google drive account using your gnspes.ca email and password as your login. Once there ask your teacher for the class code in order to be enrolled in the course.
